"Dark World of Olonkho" is an artbook featuring illustrations depicting demons from the texts of the ancient Yakut epic Olonkho. This is a collaborative project between young artists from Yakutia, Art Public School, and Anastasia Borisova, a research associate at the Olonkho Institute. The 8 artists of the project translated the descriptions of the evil spirits from the epic into the language of visual art, interpreting its plots and characters through their personal perception.
The project holds significant artistic, cultural, and scientific value. The 16 illustrations are based on the texts from early recordings of Olonkho, taken from the academic edition "Samples of Yakut Folk Literature," published between 1907 and 1918, edited by Eduard Pekarsky. This edition includes texts from 24 Olonkho narratives. These texts have immense scientific value and are recognized as some of the most archaic materials in terms of content and language.
