Nizhegorodskaia Nav. Nachalo (Nizhny Novgorod Nav. The Beginning) is a book of local tales and legends, based on fictional understanding of historical events and urban legends. The book is rich in tales of the creatures of Slavic folklore: leshy, rusalkas, domovoys, vampires, werewolves, ghosts. Creatures that usually live in Nav, the realm of the dead, but sometimes can be seen in Yav, the realm of the living. They represent elements, phenomena, or groups of people that can be found in any city. In the course of the story, it becomes clear how they interact with each other.
The cover for the first edition was designed by Nizhny Novgorod designer Dmitry Kizaev. It was based on an engraving by Adam Olearius, a seventeenth-century German scholar, depicting Nizhny Novgorod. A number of urban role-playing games were inspired by this book, and now new stories and a new urban mythology are being born through them. The book was written by Cultural Studies teacher Olga Klever, and published in 2022.
